THOUSANDS OF POLICE, DETECTIVES AND FIREMEN WERE DEPLOYED THROUGHOUT THE CAPITAL AS PRESIDENT DE GAULLE IGNORED MURDER THREATS BY THE SECRET ARMY ORGANISATION AND WENT TO THE AIRPORT TO MEET THEM.

    MAURITANIA ELECTED IN 1958 TO REMAIN WITHIN THE FRENCH COMMUNITY AS AN AUTONOMOUS REPUBLIC, AND BECAME FULLY INDEPENDENT IN 1960. IT LIES ON THE NORTH-WEST COAST OF AFRICA BETWEEN THE SPANISH SAHARA AND THE FORMER FRENCH COLONY OF SENEGAL. IT IS BOUNDED ON THE EAST AND SOUTH BY ANOTHER FORMER FRENCH COLONY - THE REPUBLIC OF MALI. THE POPULATION OF MAURITANIA IS 624,000.
