    Background: THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE UNITED NATIONS OBSERVED A MINUTE'S SILENCE IN MEMORY OF SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL YESTERDAY (MONDAY). DELEGATES HEARD STATEMENTS BY SECRETARY GENERAL, U THANT, AND PRESIDENT OF THE ASSEMBLY, ALEX QUAISON-SACKEY OF GHANA. AFTER THE TRIBUTE, THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY ADJOURNED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY.

    IN HIS TRIBUTE, U THANT ACKNOWLEDGED THE ROLE PLAYED BY SIR WINSTON IN THE FORMATION OF THE WORLD BODY, FROM ITS CONCEPTION TO THE SAN FRANCISCO CHARTER.

    MR. QUAISON-SACKEY DESCRIBED SIR WINSTON AS "THE GREATEST STATESMAN OF OUR CENTURY". HE THEN CALLED ON MEMBERS TO OBSERVE A MINUTE'S SILENCE.

    IN FRONT OF THE HEADQUARTERS, THE BLUE FLAG OF THE UNITED NATIONS HAS BEEN LOWERED TO HALF-MAST. THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY IS TO MEET AGAIN ON WEDNESDAY TO HEAR EULOGIES FROM DELEGATES. IT WAS NOT YET BEEN ANNOUNCED WHO WILL REPRESENT THE UNITED NATIONS AT THE STATE FUNERAL.
