  • Description

THE INTERNATIONAL THOMAS CUP BADMINTON TOURNAMENT OPENED IN DJAKARTA ON WEDNESDAY (31 MAY). TEAMS FROM JAPAN MALAYSIA, THE UNITED STATES AND DENMARK WILL COMPETE IN THE PRELIMINARY ROUNDS TO COMPETE FOR THE RIGHT CHALLENGE INDONESIA -- CURRENT HOLDERS OF THE TITLE.

MORE THAN 10,000 INDONESIANS, INCLUDING ACTING PRESIDENT GENERAL SUHARTO, WERE PRESENT FOR THE OPENING CEREMONY. FIRST TO MARCH INTO THE PACKED STADIUM WERE THE DANES, FOLLOWED BY THE JAPANESE, MALAYSIANS AND AMERICANS.

IN THE FIRST DAY OF THEIR INTER-ZONE SEMI-FINALS DENMARK AND MALAYSIA FINISHED LEVEL WITH TWO GAMES ALL.

DENMARK'S ERLAND KOPS WAS AT HIS BEST AS HE USED NEATLY-ANGLED DROP SHOTS TO FIGHT OFF A POWERFUL CHALLENGE FROM MALAYSIA'S YEW CHENG HOE TO WIN 15-10, 17-14.

THE YOUNG MALAYSIAN'S POWERFUL SMASHES GAVE HIM AN EARLY LEAD BUT KOPS REPLIED WITH DROP SHOTS, CLEARING THE NET BY INCHES, WHICH PUT YEW ON THE RUN AND CLINCHED THE FIRST SET. YEW MATCHED HIS OPPONENT'S GUILE IN THE SECOND SET TO TAKE A 14-12 LEAD BUT THE DANE FOUGHT BACK TO TAKE THE MATCH WITH FIVE STRAIGHT POINTS FROM A VISIBLY TIRED YEW.

DENMARK'S FIRST PAIR, PER WALSOE AND SVEN ANDERSON FARED BETTER AGAINST THE UNCERTAIN MALAYSIAN NUMBER TWO PAIR, TAN AIK HUANG AND TEH KEW SAN, BEATING THEM EASILY IN STRAIGHT SETS 15-7. 15-10.

YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) MALAYSIA ELIMINATED DENMARK WHEN THEY TOOK A WINNING 5-2 LEAD. MALAYSIA WILL NOW MEET THE WINNERS OF THE OTHER SEMI-FINAL BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE UNITED STATES.
