  • Description

Mali and Guinea have made an agreement on a flood warning system in the Niger River Basin on their mutual border. The Government representatives decided to initiate a scheme to study the formation of floods and ways of providing news of floods. The delegates also decided to implement plans for a system to protect towns, villages, farms and businesses near the river.

The Agreement was reached at a meeting of the Technical Committee of the Niger River Flood Warning Project in Bamako, Mali on the 27th and 28th of October. The Mali delegation was led by Mr Lamine Keita and the Guinea delegation by General Soumaro. The flood warning system agreement, which they've been seeking since 1969, has now been approved by the United Nations Development Programme.
