    Samora Machel, the leader of the Mozambique Liberation Movement, Frelimo, returned to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Monday (9 September) after signing an independence agreement for Mozambique in Lusaka, Zambia.

    Meanwhile, in Mozambique, the self-styled movement for a Free Mozambique (MFM), a white-dominated group dissidents, seized control of the radio station and other key installations in the capital, Lourence Marques.

    At a news conference given on his arrival at Dar es Salaam Airport on Monday, Mr. Machel said Frelimo forces and units of the Portuguese army had linked up in the main towns of Mozambique to combat the white-led rebellion.

    Mr. Machel told reporters that the joint forces would fight any form of external aggression against his country. He also said they would fight together against internal reactionaries. As he spoke, the violence continued in the two major cities in Mozambique - Lourence marques and Beira - and the Portuguese army was called on to quell major disturbances in both cities.
