  • Description

United States Secretary of State Dean Rusk and Mexico's Foreign Minister Antonio Carrilo Flores signed a treaty for their respective nations on Friday (27 October) that will end the El Chamizal land dispute, a boundary disagreement between the United States and Mexico for more thana century.

The El Chamizal (the thicket) dispute involves a lamb-chip shaped piece of land that a flood in 1864 put in the United States by changing the course of the Rio Grande, the river separating the United States from Mexico. The United States has always regarded everything north of the Rio Grande as United States territory. The dispute was settled when the United States agreed to give Mexico 630 acres in the Chamizal and Mexico gave the United States 193 acres, for a net Mexican territorial gain of 437 acres.

Until 1962, the United States refused to discuss the boundary matter. In 1962, the late President John Kennedy visited Mexico and former Mexican President Adolfo Lopez Mateos asked him to work out the return of the Chamizal. Saturday (28 October) President Johnson flies to El Chamizal for ceremonies marking the official the official return of the land of Mexico.
