  • Description

Flowing around a compound in Central Java, the house belongs to Affandi, an Indonesian painter who's now acclaimed as one of the top artists in Asia.

Affandi - that's his only name -- his achieved fame in his own lifetime with his works on display in museums in Europe, the United States and Asia and in many private collections. His best works sell for thousands of dollars.

Born in West Java now aged 64, he began lief selling tickets in a local cinema. In 1939 he tried painting for pleasure and was so successful he made it a full career five years later.

His technique is now expressionist although he started in the traditional Indonesian style of precise, tight composition. Squatting on a rush mat, he creates all his works from oils using just his fingers. Vivid colours are also his trademark.

A small gallery next to his house contains several of his favorite paintings. From time to time, he promotes young Indonesian artists by holding exhibitions of their works in Jogjakarta.

While his home is in Central Java, Affandi does most of his painting in Bali. He says the island's atmosphere is more relaxing and the people more colourful. These themes, along with an intense knowledge and appreciation of indonesian folk-lore, flow through his paintings.
