  • Description

The French motor manufacturing firm Renault will enter Formula One grand prix racing for the first time next season with a completely new turbo powered car.

SYNOPSIS: The car was secretly tested at the Nogaro track in south-west France recently. Renault's official cameraman was there to record the tests, and this film has just been released.

The vehicle is driven by a 1500 cc V-6 turbo engine. Turbo engines have proved successful for Renault in the past, and turbo powered cars took the first four places in last season's Formula 2 championships. The main problem Renault mechanics have had to overcome is the slower acceleration of a turbo engine against the standard atmospheric engine.

They believe they've overcome that problem. However, the final test will come when the Renault car competes in its first grand prix -- which will be in the European section of the Formula One circuit.

Renault will enter just one car in the championship. It will be driven by 34-year-old French driver Jean Pierre Jabouille.

Jabouille has already spent many hours at the wheel of prototype turbo cars and is fully familiar with the car that will be used next season. He's confident that Renault's initial venture into the Formula One will be an immediate success.
