Background: A party of 16 foreign correspondents, based in Hanoi, was taken to Quang-Tri province in South Vietnam to visit an area controlled by the Viet Cong. The party included correspondents from the Soviet Union, the People's Republic of China, France and Japan.

They were taken to a point about 35-kilometres south of the 17th parallel, the former Aitu base, used by the South Vietnamese Government forces for the defence of Quang-Tri city. The base was taken by Viet Cong forces after fierce fighting on April 30th, 1973, with South Vietnamese Government forces. It had used by reconnaissance aircraft and helicopters, but the runway was completely destroyed in the battle.

There is much evidence of the fighting still to be seen, in the shape of wrecked tanks and equipment.

Quang-Tri City is still in the hands of the South Vietnamese government, and forces representing both sides continue to watch each other, despite the second Paris ceasefire agreement.
