Background: In Nairobi the Duke of Gloucester invested President Daniel Arap Moi as a Knight of Grace of the Order of St John on Tuesday (March 18). The nine hundred year-old Order of St John was originally founded to care for pilgrims journeying to Jerusalem to visit Brigade as well as other first aid services.

SYNOPSIS: The investiture took place on the lawns of Nairobi State House. The Duke of Gloucester who holds the title of Commandant in Chief and Grand Prior of the Order, had arrived in Kenya the previous day for a four day visit.

The Order has been active in Kenya for more than fifty years. The original First Aid Division was established by the Nairobi police in 1925. Today the Order has some ten thousand members throughout the country.

During the investiture ceremony President Moi was give a mantle symbolising a duty to act in defence of the Christian faith and in the service of the poor, sick and suffering. The Duke of Gloucester also presented the President with cross, the insignia of the Order of St. John. The four arms of the cross symbolise the cardinal virtues, its points represent the eight beatitudes.
