Amateur Boxing .... And in the Fourth King's Cup competition in Bangkok there was a surprise points defeat for Kenya's Stephen Mushoki. In Saturday's (4 March) light-flyweight final, Mushoki a finalist in the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, met Armando Guevara of Venezuela, and lost on a split decision. There was more disappointment for Kenya in the team competition. With Venezuela and Uganda they had been expected to take most of the honours, but in fact it was South Korea that finished the top nation, winning four gold medals. Kenya had six boxers through to the finals, but they all lost.

SYNOPSIS: In the light-flyweight final, Guevara, in the white trunks, never allowed the experienced Mushoki to dictate. Although giving away height and reach he was always working for an opening, and in the early stages he scored well with solid left leads and accurate right crosses. Mushoki found it difficult to get into any sort of rhythm, and at times he was made to look very ordinary.

As the bout progressed both became wild and few punches landed cleanly. Mushoki started to put his punches together more effectively, but Guevara was always busy, never letting him settle.

At the end there was little in it. Both thought they had won, but guevara got in on a majority decision.

The heavyweight final brought the giant Woo Kwang Sik of South Korea up against the darker skinned Venezuelan, Carlos Rivera. At seven feet (2.13 metres) Woo had all the advantages.

As Woo bore forward behind long, clubbing punches it was difficult for Rivera to make any real impression, but he had the satisfaction of drawing blood from the South Korean's nose.

In the closing stages it deteriorated into a brawl, but Woo had done enough to get the decision from the judges.
