  • Description

African Nationalist leader Ndabangini Sitole arrived in Tanzania on Saturday (20 November) after leaving the Geneva conference on the future of Rhodesia for talks on the situation with the leaders of Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia.

SYNOPSIS: Asked why he left the conference, Mr. Sitole, one of four nationalist leaders at the conference, said because of indecision by other nationalist leaders, there was time for him to have further talks. He said he was referring to indecision by Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo, who are insisting that he conference set a date for independence before continuing. He said the issue of the date for independence was not substantive.

Asked about reports that his departure was prompted by armed clashes between guerrillas loyal to Mr. Mugabe and his own supporters, Mr. Sitole said he was not aware of them. He said the nationalist had not gone to the Geneva conference to highlight their own internal differences, but to see power transferred from the minority regime to the majority.
