  • Description

BRITISH PARATROOPS SENT TO MALAYSIA TO BOLSTER FORCES IN THE MALAYSIAN FEDERATION HAVE BEGUN THE ARDUOUS TASK OF FITTING THEMSELVES FOR JUNGLE WARFARE. THE 500-STRONG SECOND BATTALION OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT, WAS SENT TO MALAYSIA EARLIER THIS MONTH AFTER BEING RECALLED FROM LEAVE OVER CHRISTMAS.

PERHAPS JUNGLE FIGHTING IS THE MOST DIFFICULT OF ALL THE FORMS OF COMBAT. IT REQUIRES AN INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE LOCAL TERRAIN, GOOD PHYSICAL CONDITION AND THE ABILITY OF UNITS TO MAINTAIN THEMSELVES AWAY FROM BASE FOR DAYS AT A TIME.

THE URGENCY OF THE MALAYSIAN SITUATION HAS MADE IT NECESSARY FOR THE 'RED DEVILS' TO UNDERGO AN ACCELERATED COURSE IN THE KOTA TINGI TRAINING AREA. IT'S AN AREA OF DENSE UNDERGROWTH INTERSECTED BY FAST FLOWING STREAMS AND RIVERS -- A ZONE WHICH PROVIDES ALMOST EVERY CONCEIVABLE CONDITION THE TROOPS WILL MEET IN THE JUNGLE SHORT OF AN ACTUAL ENEMY.

IT'S NOT KNOWN HOW LONG THE COURSE FOR THE BATTALION WILL LAST, BUT WHEN IT IS COMPLETED THEY'LL BE READY TO JOIN OTHER BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH TROOPS IN SECURITY OPERATIONS AGAINST INFILTRATORS.
