  • Description

About 30 delegates from the world's chief cocoa-producing nations met in Ghana on Thursday (24 July) for the general meeting of the Cocoa Producers Alliance.

Their chief task was to discuss cocoa sales statistics and production, sales policy and estimates for the 1975/76 season. Delegates from Ghana, Nigeria, Gabon, Togo, Ivory Coast, Brazil and Cameroun attended with Mexico as an observer.

In an opening speech to the alliance, colonel F. Bernasko, Ghana's Commissioner of Cocoa Affairs, said cocoa producers demanded nothing short of the chance to reach the full stature of development. He was speaking on behalf of Ghanaian leader Colonel Ignatius Acheampong.

He said Ghana...which relies on cocoa for seventy per cent of its foreign earnings...wanted to sea the arrival of a new international economic order and the Alliance had a great responsibility to bring that about.

Talking about the prices of cocoa, Col. Bernasko said producers had warned consumers in 1972 when the International Cocoa Agreement was signed that prices were unrealistic. He said the International Cocoa Council, of which the delegates were members, had now decided that these price levels should be revised upwards yet again from another price review in 1974. This was necessary to offset the much increased production costs in the wake of galloping inflationary trends.

He made an appeal to the United States, the most important cocoa consumer. He said the Alliance was looking forward to seeing the U.S. take its rightful place within the cocoa agreement which it did not sign in 1972.
