  • Description

PRESIDENT JOSEPH MOBUTU HAS PUT THE CONGOLESE MERCHANT NAVY UNDER THE NATIONAL FLAG. HE INAUGURATED THE COMPAGNIE MARITIME CONGOLAISE AT A RECENT CEREMONY AT MATADI AND AFTERWARDS SPENT A WEEKEND ON THE CONGO RIVER IN THE COMPANY'S FIRST VESSEL, THE PATRICE EMERY LUMUMBA.

PRESIDENT MOBUTU WENT TO MATADI DURING A TOUR OF SOUTH-WEST CONGO-KINSHASA AND THERE HE HANDED OVER TO THE COMPANY THE PATRICE EMERY, LUMUMBA, NAMED AFTER THE COUNTRY'S FIRST PRIME MINISTER MURDERED SOON AFTER THE CONGO'S INDEPENDENCE IN 1960.

GENERAL MOBUTU THEN WENT ON TO POINTE NOIRE, IN CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE, FOR THE LAUNCHING OF THE P. E. LUMUMBA. HE LATER BOARDED THE VESSEL AND TRAVELLED ALONG THE CONGO RIVER TO BOMA WHERE HE BRIEFLY MET HIS PREDECESSOR AS HEAD OF STATE, THE CONGO'S FIRST PRESIDENT, M. JOSEPH KASAVUBU. M. KASAVUBU WAS OVERTHROWN IN GENERAL MOBUTU'S COUP IN NOVEMBER, 1965, AND IS NOW LIVING IN ENFORCED RETIREMENT AT BOMA.

AT BOMA, TOO, GENERAL MOBUTU STERNLY CRITICISED THE CONGO'S OLD POLITICIANS. HE SAID THEY "THIRSTED FOR POWER AND MADE THE CONGO A LAUGHING-STOCK THROUGHOUT THE WORLD."
THERE WERE MORE CELEBRATIONS AT BOMA FOR THE INAUGURATION OF THE NATIONAL MARITIME COMPANY.
