    KENYAN PRESIDENT, JOMO KENYATTA, HAS SAID THAT THE HEALTH PROBLEMS OF AFRICA MUST BE TACKLED WITH VIGOUR AND DETERMINATION. HE SAID THIS IN A SPEECH READ AT THE OPENING OF THE 18TH MEETING OF THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION'S REGIONAL COMMITTEE FOR AFRICA IN NAIROBI YESTERDAY (MONDAY).

    THE PRESIDENT'S SPEECH WAS READ BY THE MINISTER OF FINANCE, JAMES GICHURU. IT CONGRATULATED THE W.H.O., WHICH THE PRESIDENT SAID HAD "OVERCOME THE HALTING FOOTSTEPS OF INFANCY AND BLOSSOMED INTO MATURITY." BUT PRESIDENT KENYATTA SAID IT COULD NOT BE EXPECTED THAT AFRICA'S HEALTH PROBLEMS WOULD BE SOLVED OVERNIGHT.

    SEVENTY-TWO DELEGATES FROM 29 AFRICAN AND THREE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES ARE ATTENDING THE CONFERENCE, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO LAST FOR 10 DAYS. THE W.H.O. HAS SEVERAL PROJECTS OPERATING IN KENYA, INCLUDING THE CONTROL OF TUBERCULOSIS, SLEEPING SICKNESS, MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH, RURAL WATER SUPPLIES AND NUTRITION EDUCATION.

    IN THE PREPARED SPEECH, THE PRESIDENT ALSO TOLD DELEGATES THAT THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT WAS DETERMINED TO PROVIDE FREE HEALTH SERVICES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, IN SPITE OF A SHORTAGE OF TRAINED STAFF AND FINANCE.
