  • Description

BODIES AND WRECKAGE HAVE BEEN RECOVERED FROM TOKYO BAY FOLLOWING THE AIR DISASTER THAT CLAIMED THE LIVES OF 133 PEOPLE LAST FRIDAY (FEBRUARY 4).

THE ALL-NIPPON AIRLINES BOEING 727 PLUNGED INTO TOKYO BAY A FEW MINUTES BEFORE IT WAS DUE TO LAND. IT WAS THE WORST AIR DISASTER INVOLVING A SINGLE AIRCRAFT. WRECKAGE WAS SPREAD OVER A WIDE AREA OF THE STILL WATERS OF THE BAY, AND OFFICIAL SAID THE JETLINER SEEMED EITHER TO HAVE EXPLODED IN THE AIR OR BROKEN UP JUST BEFORE IT HIT THE WATER.

THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT HAS SET UP A TEAM TO INQUIRE INTO THE DISASTER, AND ANNOUNCED THAT IT HAD ACCEPTED AN OFFER FROM THE UNITED STATES TO ASSIST IN THE INQUIRY. THE BOEING COMPANY HAS ALSO SENT INVESTIGATORS TO JAPAN TO TRY TO DISCOVER WHY THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED.

MANY OF THE VICTIMS WERE RETURNING TO TOKYO FROM A HOLIDAY TRIP TO THE ANNUAL SNOW FESTIVAL IN THE NORTH OF JAPAN. AS THEIR BODIES WERE BROUGHT ASHORE FROM SALVAGE SHIPS, GRIEF-STRICKEN RELATIVES PUSHED FORWARD ON THE QUAY. COFFINS HAD BEEN STACKED IN ROWS ALONG THE WHARF. THE BODIES WERE THEN TAKEN TO A NEARBY HOSPITAL FOR IDENTIFICATION, AND LATER THE COFFINS WERE PLACED IN A BUDDHIST TEMPLE, WHERE SOBBING RELATIVES AND FRIENDS WERE ABLE TO MAKE A FINAL FAREWELL.

AT THE SCENE OF THE CRASH, THE SEARCH FOR WRECKAGE WENT ON BELOW THE WATER, WHICH WAS STREWN WITH PASSENGERS' HAND LUGGAGE. FIVE HELICOPTERS AND TWO AIRCRAFT WERE USED IN THE SALVAGE OPERATION, AS WELL AS 23 PATROL BOATS.
