  • Description

Twenty-one-year-old Mexican Raul Ramirez showed his mettle on Monday (2 June) when he beat veteran tennis star Manuel Orantes of Spain in the finals of the Men's Singles in the Italian Championship in Rome.

Ramirez -- rated two places below fourth-seeded Orantes -- played a consistently good game to take the title in three straight sets 7-6, 7-5, 7-5, in a long, testing two-hour-51-minute match.

But, the experienced Orantes proved a difficult opponent to beat, showing frequent flashes of the brilliant form that secured him a place in the finals with his victory over second-seeded Guillermo Vilas of Argentina on Monday (1 June). Two vital mistakes cost Orantes the tie-breaker that ended his first set with Ramirez...and led the young Mexican to victory.

Again, in the crucial twelfth game of the second set -- with the score at 5-6 -- Orantes served a double fault and went on to lose his service and the set.

Ramirez pursued his lead and won the first three games of the final set. Orantes fought back to level the set at 3-all, but Ramirez' consistent play brought him game, set and match after Orantes netted the final rally.

Victory brought Ramirez the coveted Men's Singles trophy and a cheque for 6,500 pounds sterling (15,000 U.S. dollars).
