    TEN COUNTRIES ARE COMPETING IN THE EIGHT-DAY TOURNAMENT: BURMA, HONGKONG, INDIA, ISRAEL, MALAYSIA, THE PHILIPPINES, SOUTH VIETNAM, SOUTH KOREA, THAILAND, AND JAPAN.

    THE RAHMAN CUP, FOR WHICH TEAMS WILL COMPETE, WAS JOINTLY HANDED TO THE JAPANESE SOCCER ASSOCIATION DURING THE BRIEF OPENING CEREMONY BY THE BURMESE AND ISRAELI CAPTAINS. IT WILL BE AWARDED TO THIS YEAR'S WINNER. THE CUP WAS PRESENTED BY THE MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER, TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, WHO IS PRESIDENT OF THE ASIAN FOOTBALL CONFEDERATION.

    BURMA AND ISRAEL, FAVOURED TO BATTLE AGAIN FOR TOP HONOURS THIS YEAR, TIED FOR THE TITLE LAST YEAR IN SAIGON, THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE CAPITAL.

    IN THE OPENING MATCH, JAPAN BEAT THE PHILIPPINES FIVE GOALS TO NIL. THE HALF TIME SCORE WAS 2-0. THE PHILIPPINES COACH BLAMED HIS TEAM'S LATE ARRIVAL IN TOKYO AND THE COLD WEATHER FOR THEIR DEFEAT.
