    The Soviet Union's champion ice skater, Kira Ivanova, won the women's event on Friday night (30 November) at the Moscow News Figure Skating Competition. Though she was in third place after the short programme, her free skating routine put her well ahead of the other fourteen competitors. Her teammate Natalia Strelkova placed second.

    SYNOPSIS: The Moscow New Competition is regarded as preview of the Olympic Championships to be held in February at Lake Placid. One of the skaters who will compete there is Canada's Debbie Albright. The twenty-one year old his been skating for twelve years. She won the Canadian bronze at the 1978 national championship and took the gold this year.

    Miss Albright went into the free skating performance in fourth place and eventually took fifth place overall.

    The Soviet Union's Natalia team's is one of the their team's leading contenders. The eighteen-year-old has been skating since she was six. A native of Leningrad, she won first place at this same event in 1977. She has placed second for the last three years in the Soviet Union's National championship.

    Miss Strelkova has competed both in the European and World championships this year placing ninth and seventeenth respectively. This performance won her second place, less than three points behind the champion.

    But it was Kira Ivanova who won the approval of the judges and the hearts of the Moscow crowd. She comes from just outside Moscow and has been skating for nine of her sixteen years. Her programme is considered more complex than last year's with more double and triple leaps. Her performance won her first place and possibly also a position on the Soviet Olympic team.
