  • Description

THE ROYAL NORWEGIAN NAVY HAS JUST TAKEN DELIVERY OF A NEW TYPE OF GERMAN-BUILT SUBMARINE. THE FIRST VESSEL OF THIS CLASS, THE 'KOBBEN', WENT INTO SERVICE ON DEC 7, AT THE NAVAL BASE AT MATHOPEN, NEAR BERGEN. DURING THE NEXT TWO YEARS MORE SUBMARINES OF THIS TYPE WILL BE ADDED TO THE NORWEGIAN FLEET.

'KOBBEN' NEEDS A CREW ON ONLY 17, AS AGAINST THE 45 MEN REQUIRED FOR THE PRESENT SUBMARINES. ANOTHER ADVANTAGE IT HAS IS THE ABILITY TO MOVE VERY FAST UNDER WATER, PERHAPS, EVEN MORE RAPIDLY THAN WHEN SURFACED. FEW DETAILS, HOWEVER, HAVE BEEN RELEASED ABOUT THE SUBMARINES PERFORMANCE.

FROM KIEL IN GERMANY, THE 'KOBBEN ' WENT TO THE BASE AT MATHOPEN, UNDERGOING EXTENSIVE TRIALS AND EXERCISES ON THE VOYAGE. IT SPENT THREE DAYS UNDER WATER WITHOUT SURFACING TO TEST THE IMPORTANT FACTOR OF ENDURANCE.
