Rioting in Taegu, South Korea..Two thousand policemen armed with clubs crushed a big demonstration, April 2, against what has become known as the "two-evil law". This is the anti-Communism law and control law over demonstration. Those taking part included progressives, students and teachers.
They planned to hold a rally in front of Taegu railway station, despite a ban on holding a protest meeting on station ground. At the request of the station master, the police blocked every street leading to the station. Then cam the demonstrators-about 400 of them.
When they tried to break through, police turned on them with their clubs, and warned them not to try to reach the station. Forty-nine arrests were made. Police in two jeeps were ready to use tear gas if things got out of hand-but their colleagues could handle the situation.
Similar demonstration occurred in three different parts of the city the same day. Police destroyed a demonstrator's loudspeaker car and confiscated placards with such slogans as "Chang Government trying to make murder law should step down" and "Government should take stern action before making the two-evil law. After dark, another group of demonstrators marched to the police station to stage a protest meeting outside. Police arrived and arrested them all, including the leaders.
A protest rally against the "two-evil law" was held a Seoul on Mar 22 and a counter-demonstration there in Mar 28.
