The final judging took place on Saturday (11 March) in the presence of the Minister of Industrial Development and the Environment, M. Louis Alexandrenne. The guest of honour was Madame Abdou Diouf, wife of the Prime Minister.

SYNOPSIS: The final selection of the winning entries was made at the Hotel Teranga. Examples of local skills had come from every region in the country and demonstrated the high level of craftsmanship which is maintained not only in traditional art forms, but also in the creation of modern objects as well.

For the jury, the selection of the winners was difficult, as the range of entries was impressively wide. The competition was designed to foster an awareness of the national heritage in arts and crafts.

The presence of the Minister of Industrial Development underlined the Government's interest in this field. Senegal maintains a high level of cultural awareness led by President Leopold Sedar Senghor one of Africa's elder statesmen. He is a distinguished poet.

Madame Diouf was shown works that will later be sough by tourists. Senegal is among West Africa's most popular nations for foreign visitors. These works represent more than products for the tourist market As sections of the rural population move into towns, traditional skills are threatened. Exhibitions like this serve to preserve a unique culture.
