  • Description

Hundreds of thousands of cheering, chanting Poles crammed the streets of the ancient city of Krakow today (Friday) to welcome President De Gaulle to Poland's former royal capital. It seemed that all of Krakow's 500,000 citizens had turned out as the French leader drove in an open car along the 10 mile (15 klm) route from the airport to the medieval Wawel Castle.

The President smiled and waved with both arms in response to shouts to welcome. Flowers toosed from the crowd showered the President's car and strewed the route to the Wawel Castle, perched on a rocky hilltop overlooking the River Vistula. At the castle, where the French leader stayed during his one-day Krakow visit, President De Gaulle was shown ancient art treasures painting.

The Wawel Castle was the residence of Poland's kings up to the 17th century, when the capital moved to Warsaw, and 28 kings are buried in the vaults of the adjacent Cathedral. President De Gaulle also visited the gold-and-green-domed Sigismund Chapel, one of the most beautiful examples of Polish renaissance architecture. The President is on a one-week official visit to Poland.
