Background: The first African meeting of the International Union of Architects was opened in the togo capital Lome on Monday (29 March) by the Togo Minister of Public Works, Mines, Transports and Posts, Mr. Alex Mivedor.

The conference will spend a week considering such themes as the contribution architects can make to their national way of life, architects and the evolution of the rural world, and problems of construction in Africa.

At the opening session the secretary general of the International Union, Mr. Michael Weill, who represents more than 30,000 architects in 80 countries of the world appealed to the delegates not to make their resolutions too general but to concentrate on practical propositions which could be carried out by their Governments.

Mr. Mivedor said Lome was an appropriate place to hold the meeting because the United Nations was establishing a centre for building and construction development there.

He said architects must keep in contact with local inhabitants and be aware of their environments.
