  • Description

Ghanian Finance Minister Joseph Mensah and United States Ambassador Thomas McElhiney on Monday (June 22) signed a new multi-million dollar agreement between their countries, in Accra. Under the terms of the deal, goods worth over 12 million dollars (over GBP 5 million Sterling) will be shipped to Ghana as part of the American Food for Peace programme.

After the signing, Mr. Mensah said that the agreement was aimed at achieving a greater measure of security and price stability in Ghana. Ambassador McElhiney told him that the terms of the agreement were the most liberal possible under American regulations.

The latest deal brings the total value of goods shipped to Ghana under the Food for Peace programme to over 60 million dollars. The commodities involved include wheat, tallow, vegetable oil and cotton.

The United States has also agreed to plough back part of the long-term repayments into Ghanaian economic development and into programmes concerned with population growth, such as child health and maternal welfare.
