    Britain's mercy task force in the Bay of Bengal yesterday (Tuesday) started air-lifting emergency supplies to survivors of the East Pakistan tidal wave disaster. Task force commander Brigadier Pat Ovens flew over the area, then directed the mercy mission of eight helicopters and nearly a hundred landing craft.

    Relief operations are based on the 11,000 ton assault ship Intrepid and the converted aircraft carrier Triumph.

    A top priority target for the landing craft was Patuakhali, one of the worst hit areas in the zone devastated by cyclone and tidal wave 11 days earlier.

    Besides emergency food supplies, the task forces is rushing kits and powder for purifying water to the disaster area. Vehicles, trailers and heavy earth-moving equipment will follow.

    As the official death toll from the disaster mounts towards 200,000, the British will be co-ordinating their efforts in the south and west of the stricken area with the American relief force in the north and east. French and German helicopters are also moving into the area.
