  • Description

About 200 men of the 3rd and 7th Battalions of the Royal Rhodesia Regiment - all territorials - reported for duty at Lusaka, Northern Rhodesia, Feb 13, as a precaution against a possible outbreak of violence. Police reservists have been warned to be ready for cell-up if their services are needed.

The move followed the statement in London, UK, last week by Mr. Kenneth Kaunda, leader of the United National Independence Party, that there would be an explosion in Rhodesia "worse than Mau Mau" if his demands concerning the Government of Northern Rhodesia were not carried out.

The territorials settled in at Lusaka Feb 13. Training was to begin the following day. A police spokesman said there was no evidence that Europeans or Africans on the Copperbelt were arming: the situation was calm.
