  • Description

THREE THOUSAND FORMER STUDENTS IN CONGO-KINSHASA, WHO WERE COMPELLED TO ENROL IN THE ARMY LAST MONTH FOLLOWING STUDENT DISTURBANCES, HAVE QUALIFIED AS TRAINED SOLDIERS. THE STUDENTS, WHO RECEIVED THEIR PROFESSIONAL INSIGNIAS AT A RECENT PARADE, WERE ORIGINALLY ORDERED INTO THE ARMY FOLLOWING THE CLOSURE OF THEIR UNIVERSITY. THE COMPULSORY ENROLMENT ORDER COVERED BOTH MALE AND FEMALE STUDENTS. THEY WERE ORDERED TO SERVE TWO YEARS IN THE ARMY BEFORE RESUMING THEIR STUDIES, BUT THE FUTURE OF THE CLOSED UNIVERSITY HAS NOT YET BEEN ANNOUNCED.

SYNOPSIS: THREE THOUSAND FORMER UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN THE CONGO DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC HAVE GRADUATED AS SOLDIERS -- SIX WEEKS AFTER BEING FORCIBLE ENROLLED IN THE ARMY. THE STUDENTS,BOTH MALE AND FEMALE, WERE ORDERED TO SERVE TWO YEARS IN THE ARMY AFTER THEIR UNIVERSITY WAS CLOSED DOWN FOLLOWING UNREST AND VIOLENT CLASHES WITH POLICE.

THE FORMER STUDENTS WERE AWARDED THEIR INSIGNIARS AS QUALIFIED SOLDIERS AT A FORMAL PARADE RECENTLY, AT THEIR CAMP OUTSIDE KINSHASA. THEY WERE ORDERED INTO THE ARMY BY PRESIDENT JOSEPH MOBUTU, AND SO FAR NO ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN MADE CONCERNING THE UNIVERSITY ITSELF - WHICH REMAINS CLOSED. ABOUT 60 OF THE THREE THOUSAND STUDENTS FAILED TO OBEY THE ENROLMENT ORDER, AND WERE SUBSEQUENTLY COURT-MARTIALLED. THE REST WERE TAUGHT HOW TO BE SOLDIERS, AND AT THEIR QUALIFYING PARADE WERE GIVEN THE CHANGE TO SHOW JUST HOW MUCH THEY HAD LEARNED........
