    The Israeli Air Force (IAF) celebrated its 31st anniversary last we (19 July) with a helicopter display and flypast of its most modern jet-fighter planes. The celebrations were held at the IAF Training School in the Negev Desert.

    SYNOPSIS: The origins of the IAf lie in Israel's Air Service, established in 1947 as the air branch of the Hagannah Eleven planes were organised into a single squadron, all the Jewish Settlement could muster at the outbreak of the War of Independence.

    On 15 May, 1948 the State of Israel declared her independence, and two weeks later the IAF was established only to find itself involved in battles with invading Arab armies. Then the IAF's fighting strength consisted of an assortment of Messerschmidts, Spitfires, Decotas, Mustangs and other World War Two surplus planes.

    Since those beginnings the IAF has developed into a modern fighting force. 1st most remarkable military achievements include the destruction of 376 jets on Egyptian airfields in the first three hours of the 1967 war and its spectacular rescue operation at Entebbe in 1976.
