Background: The war in the Western Sahara, where Polisario guerrillas are fighting Morocco for independence, entered its fifth year on Wednesday (27 February). The guerrillas say that Moroccan troops suffered 6,000 casualties during 700 raids carried out last year. They claim they will be strong enough to "impose peace" in the region within the next twelve months. The United States recently supplied Morocco with anti-guerrilla aircraft and helicopters which will strengthen her position in any future negotiations to end the war.

SYNOPSIS: The Polisario guerrillas attacked the Atlantic coastal town of Boujdour last month (February). They claim 400 Moroccan soldiers died and two aircraft were shot down, a french-built Mirage, and an American F-5 fighter. An official Moroccan communique issued the day after the attack put the figure at 20 casualties, but said 200 Polisario guerrillas were killed. The Moroccan News Agency denied any aircraft were lost.

Moroccan government sources said that more than 70 Polisario vehicles were destroyed in the raid, and that the bodies of dozens of guerrillas still lay in the desert.

Morocco annexed the phosphate - rich territory last August when Mauritania withdrew claims to the former Spanish colony. But the guerrillas control the region and mount raids deep across the Moroccan frontier. Thirty five countries now recognise their Western Sahara Republic.
