Background: N'gor beach in the Senegalese capital Dakar was turned into a giant artist's studio on Sunday (30 June) when 200 children under fifteen-years-old competed in the traditional sand sculpture contest.

Dakar schoolboys Oumar Samb and Mamadou Fall came first in two categories with impressively skilful pieces of work. Both entries were of a religious nature. Oumar Samb's winning sculpture was a child Christ in the arms of the Virgin Mary. Mamadou Fall made a meditating Buddha.

The two boys were later presented with tickets to La Baule, France, where they will represent Senegal in the final international sand sculpture competition.

The contestants had only two hours tow hours to make their entries using a small trowel, knife and bowl of water.

The contest was orgenised by the French newspaper Le Figaro, Senegalese newspaper Le Soleil and the Air France and Air Africa companies.
