    IN THE FINALS OF THE MEN'S 100-METRES FREESTYLE SWIMMING EVENT LAST SUNDAY (20 OCTOBER), THE GOLD MEDAL WAS WON BY THE AUSTRALIAN, M. WENDEN; THE SILVER MEDAL BY K. WALSH, U.S.A., AND THE BRONZE MEDAL BY HIS COMPATRIOT M. SPITZ; B. MCGREGOR OF GREAT BRITAIN CAME FOURTH.

    IN THE WOMEN'S FINALS OF THE SAME EVENT, ALL THREE MEDALS WERE WON BY U.S. SWIMMERS: J. HENNE CAME FIRST, S. PEDERSEN SECOND, L. GUSTAVSON THIRD.

    AT 52.2 SECONDS WENDEN, AN 18 YEAR-OLD STUDENT FROM NEW SOUTH WALES, BETTERED THE WORLD RECORD AND SET UP AN OLYMPIC RECORD. WALSH, WHOSE TIME WAS 52.8 SECONDS, WAS JOINT WINNER OF THE PREVIOUS WORLD RECORD. SPITZ'S TIME WAS 53.0 SECONDS., MCGREGOR'S: 53.6 SECONDS (HE WAS SILVER MEDAL WINNER AT THE 1964 TOKYO OLYMPICS).

    THE 15-YEAR-OLD SILVER MEDALLIST IN THE WOMEN'S EVENT, SUE PEDERSEN, WAS FAVOURITE AFTER LEADING THE QUALIFIERS WITH A TIME OF 60.2 SECONDS, BUT SHE WAS DEFEATED IN THE FINALS WHEN HER COUNTRYWOMAN J. HENNE CLIPPED TWO TENTHS OF A SECOND OF THIS TIME, WHILE SHE HERSELF ADDED ONE TENTH OF A SECOND TO IT.
