  • Description

THE PASSING-OUT PARADE AT THE ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY, SANDHURST -- FROM WHERE MOST REGULAR OFFICERS OF THE BRITISH ARMY GRADUATE -- IS KNOWN AS THE SOVEREIGN'S PARADE. IT WAS HELD TODAY (THURSDAY) WITH BRITAIN'S CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF, FIELD MARSHAL SIR RICHARD HULL, TAKING THE SALUTE AS REPRESENTATIVE OF QUEEN ELIZABETH.

OFFICER CADETS AT TODAY'S CEREMONY WERE NOT ONLY FROM BRITAIN, BUT ALSO FROM SUCH COUNTRIES AS BHUTAN, THAILAND, UGANDA, KENYA, MALAWI AND TANZANIA.

THE FORM OF THE PARADE IS DESIGNED TO EMPHASISE THAT SENIOR OFFICER CADETS ARE PARADING AT SANDHURST FOR THE LAST TIME BEFORE RECEIVING THEIR SOVEREIGN'S COMMISSION. THE TRADITIONAL CLIMAX TO THE PARADE COMES WHEN THE SENIOR DIVISION OF CADETS MARCHES UP THE STEPS OF THE GRAND ENTRANCE OF THE ACADEMY -- AND THE ADJUTANT RIDES HIS HORSE RIGHT INTO THE GRAND.

THE SENIOR CADETS ON PARADE TODAY ENTERED THE ACADEMY IN SEPTEMBER 1964.
