  • Description

The visiting Prime Minister of Mauritius, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, had talks in Bonn yesterday (Tuesday) with the West Germany Foreign Minister, Herr Walter Scheel.

The two diplomats met at the Foreign Ministry to discuss possible future sugar exports from Mauritius to the European Common Market.

Herr Scheel told the Prime Minister of Mauritius that West Germany would try to solve the problems of Britain, the island's main sugar customer, joining the Common Market.

But Herr Scheel stressed to Sir Seewoosagur that the problem would have to be met by all the Market countries and Britain.

Sugar accounts for 96 per cent of Mauritian exports, 85 per cent of them going to Britain.

Sugar is one of the products of which there is a glut in Common Market countries and which could cause contention among the members.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam is visiting all six Common Market countries during his current European tour.
