  • Description

King Hussein on Jordan was wildly acclaimed July 28th as he toured the border towns of Mafrak and Ramtha - two days after Syria had re-opened her borders to Jordan traffic.

At Mafrak, camels were slaughtered in his honour. Later the King inspected a guard of the Royal Tank Unit, and chatted with Hashemite soldiers. A guard of honour at Ramtha was inspected by the King.

The Jordan-Syrian border was closed seven weeks ago following Syrian allegations of provocative attacks on her border villages. on report alleges a Jordan patrol crossed two miles into Syria and tried unsuccessfully to steel sheep from a village. Troops and villagers exchanged fire.

Re-opening of the border came after a visit of Arab League Secretary-General, Abdul Khaliq Hassouna, to Amman. After meetings with the King and Jordan Prime Minister, Hazza Majali, Hassouna, announced that diplomatic relations between Jordan and the United Arab Republic - several after the coup d'etat in Iraq last year - would be re-established "very soon". Agreement was also reached on the cessation of hostile press and radio campaigns directed against Jordan by Cairo - and suspension of activities by political refugees.
