IN CYPRUS, POLICE INVESTIGATING THE BLAZE AT THE LARCANA AVIATION FUEL DEPOT HAVE ARRESTED SIX GREEK-CYPRIOTS, A GOVERNMENT STATEMENT ANNOUNCED TONIGHT (FRIDAY).

THE STATEMENT SAID FOUR OF THE FIVE STORAGE TANKS INVOLVED WERE STILL BLAZING BUT THE FIRE WAS UNDER CONTROL. THE BLAZE AT THE OTHER TANK WAS QUELLED BY CYPRIOT AND BRITISH ARMY FIREMEN EARLY TODAY AFTER BATTLING ALL NIGHT TO PREVENT THE FIRE SPREADING.

FIVE-THOUSAND GALLONS OF FOAM AND FIRE-FIGHTING EQUIPMENT WERE BEING FLOWN IN TO HELP CONTAIN THE BLAZE. 8,000 TONS OF AVIATION FUEL, FOR SUPPLY TO THE RAF HAVE BEEN LOST. HAD THE WIND CHANGED DIRECTION, THE INSTALLATIONS OF SIX FOREIGN COMPANIES WOULD HAVE BEEN ENDANGERED.

THE SABOTAGE RAID WAS CARRIED OUT AT NIGHT BY ARMED MEN WHO OVERPOWERED TWO GREEK-CYPRIOT SOLDIERS ON GUARD DUTY.

IN THE ENSUING GUN BATTLE, ONE OF THE SOLDIERS WAS WOUNDED IN THE LEG. THE RAIDERS THEN PLACED TIME BOMBS NEAR THE TANKS AND MADE OFF.
