    FIFTY-SEVEN PERSONS ABOARD DIED WHEN A C-46 TRANSPORT BELONGING TO THE C.A.T., CRASHED IN CENTRAL TAIWAN, ON JUNE 22ND. IT WAS ON THE LAST LEG OF A FLIGHT FROM THE PESCADORES ISLANDS TO TAIPEI.

    AMONG THOSE KILLED WAS A MALAYSIAN MILLIONAIRE. HIS WIFE AND SOME MEMBERS OF THE MALAYSIAN DELEGATION TO A TAIWAN FILM FESTIVAL WERE ALSO ABOARD THE DOOMED CRAFT. AMONG THE FIFTY-SEVEN DEAD WERE TWENTY U.S. CITIZENS RETURNING FROM A SIGHTSEEING TRIP.

    THE CRASH WAS THE WORST IN THE HISTORY OF THE AIRLINE, FOUNDED IN 1946 BY THE LATE LT.-GENERAL CLAIRE CHENNAULT OF THE WARTIME FLYING TIGERS. IT WAS THE FIRST CRASH BY THE TAIWAN GOVERNMENT AIRLINE TO CLAIM THE LIVES OF ANY PASSENGERS.
