  • Description

Exiled Russian author Alexander Solzhenitsyn was finally presented with his 1970 Nobel Literature prize in Oslo on Tuesday (10 December) at a ceremony shunned by Soviet bloc diplomats.

The bearded 56-year-old writer of "Gulag Archipelago" and other critical works about the Soviet Union received his gold medallion from King Carl Gustaf of Sweden.

An audience of 1,800 -- including royalty, scientists and scholars -- gathered in the richly-decorated Stockholm concert hall to see Solzhenitsyn presented with his prize. He was expelled from the Soviet Union last year and is now living in Switzerland. His wife Natalya was also at the ceremony.

In ???slo, on the same day, another Nobel awards ceremony was being conducted. This time it was the 1974 Peace Prize ... and it was awarded jointly to Japanese ex-Premier Eisaku Sato and Ireland's ex-Foreign Minister Sean Marbride.

Mrs. Aase Lion???ess, Chairman of the Norwegian Parliament's Nobel Peace Prize Committee, paid tribute to the two winners. She said Mr. Sato, aged 73, had insisted his Government would never allow Japan to produce, own or introduce nuclear weapons in his country. Mr. Sato is the first Asian to win the accolade. Mr. Macbride had helped respect for human rights to increase, she said.

King ???av, other members of the royal family, the Government, Parliament and foreign diplomats were at the ceremony. But, a Nobel Institution official said, the ambassadors of all the East European countries and the People's Republic of China boycotted it. No reason was given.
