  • Description

Montreal's three universities -- McGill, Montreal and Sir George Williams College go on strike, as students at five of Quebec's six universities walk out over demands for more provincial aid to higher education. In all, the institutions have fifteen thousand students.

At the University of Montreal on the slopes of Mount Royal, mounted police keep an eye on the picketing students -- a scene repeated at the other universities in the province. Only university to oppose the walkout was Sherbrooke University, where the students voted against a strike. In one class at McGill, two students of a class of three-hundred showed up on the first day of the strike. A one-sheet student newspaper was distributed to publicize the strike, carrying slogans in both French and English.

At Sir George Williams College, the situation was quiet with most students remaining absent from classes. However, no picket lines were established here.
