  • Description

A band of black men, women and children from the United States brought a hijacked jetliner across the Atlantic to Algiers Tuesday (1 August) with the largest ransom ever taken, on board -- one million dollars (400,000 pounds sterling).

In Algiers, the aircraft, a DC-8 owned by Delta Airlines of the United States, was allowed to land -- "For humanitarian reason and so as to spare human lives," the Algerian authorities said.

The group of air pirates were first interrogated at Algiers Airport and then driven to an unknown destination in town - their motives, identity and fate still unknown.

Even their number was not immediately clear. Earlier reports said there were seven, but official Algerian sources said there were eight -- three men, two women and three children.
