    A grand parade through the streets of Tananarive marked the opening of the 14th National Congress of the ruling Social Democrat party in Madagascar on Tuesday (7 Sept 71).

    The vice-president of Madagascar, M. Tsiebo Calvin, declared later that the party's only candidate at the 1972 presidential elections would be the current President and founder of the Social Democrat party, M. Philibert Tsiranana.

    SYNOPSIS: A grand parade through the streets of Tananarive of more than 40,000 students and workers marked the opening of the 14th National Congress of the ruling Social Democrat Party of Madagascar on Tuesday.

    Representatives of friendly countries including Lesotho, Israel and Mauritius took part in the celebrations with messages of fraternal greetings.

    The theme of the Congress is "Party, Spirit and Labour". The vice-president, M. Tsiebo Calvin, called on the participants to spread the influence of the party to get the full support of the nation.

    President Tsiranana, it was also announced later by the vice-president, had been chosen by the Social Democrat Party as the only candidate in the 1972 presidential election.

    President Tsiranana thanked the party for the trust expressed in him -- and called on the people's support.
