  • Description

CHINESE ARTIST CHEN WEN HSI, WHO LIVES IN A SUBURB OF SINGAPORE, IS RENOWNED IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA AS A MASTER OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE PAINTING, BUT HE IS ALSO A FLUENT EXPONENT OF MANY WESTERN STYLES OF ART, FROM POST-IMPRESSIONIST TO ABSTRACT AND EVEN ACTION PAINTINGS.

CHEN WEN HSI'S LARGE, ONE-STOREY HOUSE IS A WITNESS TO THE MANY-SIDED NATURE OF HIS LIFE AND WORK. OUTSIDE A WALL IS ENTIRELY COVERED WITH A GARISHLY COLOURED ABSTRACT MURAL, PAINTED BY CHEN, WHICH WOULD BE ENTIRELY IN PLACE ON A MODERN WESTERN HOUSING ESTATE. INSIDE, THE WALLS ARE BRIGHT WITH DELICATE TRADITIONAL CHINESE PAINTINGS OF BIRDS AND TREES -- MANY OF THEM EXECUTED BY THE ARTIST USING THE CENTURIES-OLD SKILLS OF FINGER PAINTING. DEFT STROKES WITH THE BACKS AND TIPS OF HIS FINGERS CAN PRODUCE A FINELY-DETAILED RENDERING OF SPARROWS SITTING ON A BRANCH.

STUDENTS VISIT CHEN'S HOUSE FOR LESSONS IN STYLES OF PAINTING. HE HAS HELD MANY EXHIBITIONS SINCE THE LATE 1930'S INCLUDING SEVERAL OUTSIDE ASIA IN ENGLAND, FRANCE, WEST GERMANY AND AUSTRALIA. HE PLANS AN EXHIBITION IN FRANCE THIS YEAR.

BORN IN SOUTHERN CHINA, CHEN STUDIED ART IN SHANGHAI AND MOVED TO SINGAPORE BEFORE THE COMMUNIST REVOLUTION IN 1949. DESPITE HIS WIDE INTEREST IN WESTERN ART, CHEN HAS RESERVATIONS ABOUT TRAVELLING OUTSIDE ASIA HIMSELF, SPEAKS NO WESTERN LANGUAGE AND COMPLAINS THAT TOO FEW PEOPLE IN THE WEST SPEAK CHINESE.
