Background: Thousand of Iranians, carrying placards and portraits of the late Ayatollah Taleghani prayed at his burial site on Saturday (15 September), marking the fifth day of mourning for the former spiritual leader of Teheran's Islamic community.

SYNOPSIS: The Ayatollah Mahmoud Taleghani had been the spiritual chief of Teheran and one of the most popular members of the ruling clergy. He died last Monday (10 September) at the age of sixty-eight. Saturday's mourning prayers were much less hysterical than last week's burial scenes.

There has been criticism from Iran's Prime Minister Mehdi Bazargan over the power the clergy is exerting in Iran. In a speech to an economic seminar in Teheran yesterday (16 September) he said "Our hands are tied because our power has been taken away, our authority has been taken away" and "we insist that reconstruction takes time, but nobody listens".

The Ayatollah Montazeri has been chosen by the Ayatollah Khomeini to replace Ayatollah Taleghani as the Imam - Jomeh, or Shi'ite spiritual leader of Teheran. He is also the head of the Constitutional Review body, and has argued that too much power should not be given to any single man. He has proposed the establishment of a Presidential Council. That issue is still to be debated.

It has also been reported that the Revolutionary Council has passed a bill authorising a purge of all government ministries, banks, universities and government companies, in order to create an atmosphere favourable to the revolution.
