Background: INTRODUCTION: A statue of the present Pope, John Paul, is to be unveiled tomorrow, Monday (29 June) to commemorate the election of the Archbishop of Cracow to the position of Pope in 1978.

SYNOPSIS: The huge statue of Pope John was cast in bronze at the foundry in Wegrzce, near Cracow. It was designed by the sculptor Bronislaw Chromy, one of Pope John Paul's greatest admirers.

From the foundry, the statue was taken by truck to Tarnow cathedral, where the present Pope was ordained as Archbishop of Cracow in 1963. A large number of the people of Cracow--fervent Catholics--gathered in the cathedral square the witness the arrival of the statue. It is expected that huge crowds will attend the unveiling of the figure tomorrow (Monday 29 June), -- the day of St. Peter and St. Paul.

Installation of the monument was supervised by Professor Chromy, who had spent two years casting the statue of the man who, as Karol Wojtyla, became one of the modern world's most popular Popes -- John Paul the Second. The erection of the statue comes at a time when the Pope himself is in hospital, still suffering from the effects of an attempt to assassinate him in St. Peter's Square, Rome.
