Background: The Argentina soccer team, last year's World Cup winners received an all-round beating by West Germany on Wednesday (12 September). West Germany was deposed as World Champions when Argentina took the title. Although the score was two to one, with the exception of experienced Argentina Internationals Daniel Passarella and Amrico Gallego, the visitors were made to look like novices. Passarella and Gallego were the only players fielded from the Argentina World Cup winning team.

SYNOPSIS: Argentina, wearing black shorts and playing left to right, took a cautious approach from the kick off. Until this match they had been unbeaten in their European tour but their wins were not the crushing victories of a world champion team.

West Germany, in their nine matches under the management of Jupp Derwall, created a hateful of chances in the first half, without placing the ball in the net. The Argentine attack also breaks down in front of the West German goal. At half time there was no score.

From the start of the second half, West Germany showed attacking style.

As keeper Burdenski watched, his team-mate Klaus Allofs fastened onto a cross from foraging defender Manfred Kalz, putting West Germany in front with his first goal for his country.

Eleven minutes later Rummenigge made it two - nil when he nodded in a pinpoint cross sent over by Hansi Mueller.

Argentina was a pale shadow of last year's title winners without the midfield vision of Osvaldo Ardiles and the drive up front of Mario Kempes and Leopoldo Luque. But they were to get one consolation goal, scored by Castro. Argentine manager Menotti hopes to build this inexperienced team into formidable defenders in time for the next World Cup series.
