  • Description

European shipowners from seven countries met in Scheveningen, Holland, yesterday to discuss Iceland's decision for a 12 mile fishing limit to be enforced on September 1.

The decision banning foreign fishing boats from Iceland's waters has caused a storm of protests from European fishers.

Britain has said the decision is unacceptable. Heading the British delegation was Major General Sir Farndale Phillips of the Trawler Federation whose members would be hard hit by the ban.

The shipowners who all represent fishing interests were hoping to find a way of opening talks with Iceland again.
