  • Description

In Nairobi, thousands of students demonstrated on Wednesday (12 March) in angry reaction to the murder of the popular Kenyan politician Josiah Mwangi Kariuki, whose body was identified by his three wives the day before.

The students, chanting "JM - JM", moved from the university area into the centre of town where they were dispersed by riot police.

Demonstrations were held again the following day, although most of the shops that closed the day before in anticipation of violence were open again.

Many students failed to attend lectures for the second day running, but there was no official boycott. One placard on a university building accused the country's security offices of murdering Mr. Kariuki.

The 45-year-old politician's body was found with bullet wounds in the Ngong Forest about 10 miles (16 kilometres) from the city, the day after he disappeared on March 2. But it was not identified until Tuesday.

Mr. Kariuki, a critic of government land policy, was described as the unofficial leader of the opposition in Kenya's one-party system.

His death is part of a recent rash of violence in Kenya, including a bus bombing in Nairobi that killed 27 persons the day before Mr. Kariuki vanished.
