  • Description

AN ANCIENT STATUE, CLAIMED TO BE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ARCHAEOLOGICAL FINDS IN GREECE IN RECENT YEARS, WAS BROUGHT TO THE SURFACE IN ATHENS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY).

IT WAS DISCOVERED A FEW DAYS AGO BY WORKMEN DIGGING DRAINS IN THE SUBURB OF SAINT JOHN RENDIS. EXPERTS CALLED TO THE AREA EXAMINED THE PARTLY UNEARTHED STATUE AND REALIZING ITS POTENTIAL IMPORTANCE, IMMEDIATELY BEGAN MAKING ARRANGEMENTS TO HAVE THE CARVING BROUGHT TO THE SURFACE.

THE STATUE, DATED ABOUT THE 5TH CENTURY B.C., IS REGARDED ALREADY AS BEING REPRESENTATIVE OF THE FINE WORK OF THE SO-CALLED CLASSICAL PERIOD OF ATHENIAN CULTURE. THE WORK, EXECUTED IN RELIEF, SHOWS TWO WOMEN -- ONE STANDING AND THE OTHER SITTING.

THE GREEK GOVERNMENT'S ANTIQUITIES DEPARTMENT HAS PLACED SPECIAL IMPORTANCE IN THE FIND AND HOPE THAT THE EARTH UNDER THE SAINT JOHN RENDIS AREA MAY YIELD UP MORE ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURES. IN CLASSICAL TIMES, THE DISTRICT WAS ONE OF THE LARGEST CEMETERIES OF THE OLD CITY STATE OF ATHENS.
