  • Description

President Nguyen Van Thieu told a joint session of the South Vietnamese national assembly in Saigon yesterday (Saturday) that South Vietnam was now nine tenths on the road to peace. The President was speaking in a 90 minute address on the state of the nation. The speech was part of National Day -- the seventh anniversary of the fall of Ngo Dinh Diem's regime.

President Thieu dismissed the nation of the coalition government containing Communist members, saying he would never enter into a coalition with Communists. He also attacked advocates of neutralism as "cowards.... not deserving to be in the free and democratic South".

Shortly before President Thieu opened his speech to the joint assembly a group of 23 opposition senators and assembly representatives walked out of the senate hall in protest against the recent re-election of the pro-government speaker, Nguyen Van Huyen.
